The following strategies will help streamline communication and reduce misunderstandings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gain the person\u2019s attention before starting a conversation. It is helpful to address them by their name.<\/li><li>Face the individual when speaking. Ideally, you should be positioned within 3 to 6 feet.<\/li><li>Maintain eye contact at all times.<\/li><li>Speak firmly and clearly, but refrain from shouting.<\/li><li>Use short and simple sentences, avoiding complex words and phrases whenever possible. If the individual appears to have difficulty understanding, try rephrasing.<\/li><li>Avoid covering your mouth with your hands or other objects when speaking in order to allow your listener to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearinglink.org\/living\/lipreading-communicating\/what-is-lipreading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speechread (lip read)<\/a>, if desired.
