Many sources of potentially damaging noise are obvious \u2013 think rock \u2018n roll concerts, sporting events, power equipment and motorcycles. But danger lurks in some surprising places, as well. Maybe even beneath your Christmas tree!<\/p>\n<h2>Noise-Induced Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n<p>An estimated 15 percent of all Americans experience noise-induced <span><a href=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/hearing-loss\/\" title=\"Hearing loss | Arizona Hearing\">hearing loss<\/a><\/span> (NIHL). Exposure to loud sounds \u2013 primarily those that exceed 85 decibels (dB) \u2013 permanently damages the sensory cells in the inner ear, causing irreversible hearing loss. <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hear-it.org\/high-frequency-hearing-loss\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"High frequencies | hear-it.org\" rel=\"noopener\">High frequencies<\/a><\/span> are the first to be affected, but the loss is progressive and there is no cure. The problem is especially acute in children, who are at risk for <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/hearing\/effects-of-hearing-loss-on-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"developmental delays | asha.org\" rel=\"noopener\">developmental delays<\/a><\/span> that can affect their social and academic performance.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 30 to 50 million people in the U.S. are exposed to dangerous sound levels every day, a number that includes roughly half of all Tucson teenagers and young adults aged 12 to 35. Fortunately, NIHL can be prevented. Wearing <span><a href=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/hearing-loss\/custom-hearing-protection\/\" title=\"Hearing protection | Arizona Hearing\">hearing protection<\/a><\/span> when participating in activities where harmful noise is present and taking steps to reduce exposure in the first place are the best ways to protect your hearing.<\/p>\n<h2>Protect Your Children this Holiday Season<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Holiday presents\" src=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/presents-256x256.jpeg\" alt=\"Pile of holiday presents \" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5835\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, many of today\u2019s most popular toys can potentially cause long-term hearing damage. And let\u2019s face it, kids are likely to do just that!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to measure the safety of other toys not on this list, there are plenty of free smartphone apps you can download that will measure dB levels.
