Whether or not your favorite film took top honors, awards season is the perfect time to think about celebrities deserving of recognition who have an additional obstacle to overcome: <strong>hearing loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hearing Loss Does Not Discriminate<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"famous folks with hearing loss\" src=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/paparazzi.jpeg\" alt=\"paparazzi taking photos of famous people with hearing loss \" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/paparazzi.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/paparazzi-256x170.jpeg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>About 48 million Americans are diagnosed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hearing-loss\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373072\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"hearing impairment | mayoclinic.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hearing impairment<\/a>. That means about one in five people has <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/hearing-loss\/\" title=\"hearing loss | Arizona Hearing Specialists\">hearing loss<\/a> in Tuscon. While the condition is primarily associated with older adults, in reality hearing loss does not discriminate. According to your <strong>Tucson audiologist<\/strong>, anybody can develop it \u2013 young or old, rich or poor, famous or not. Even celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the more well-known actors and actresses with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/help\/hearing-loss\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"hearing loss | healthyhearing.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hearing loss<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marlee Matlin. <\/strong>Marlee Matlin became deaf at the age of 18 months, either the result of a malformed <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonahearing.com\/hearing-aids\/cochlear-implants-overview\/\" title=\"cochlea | Arizona Hearing Specialists\">cochlea<\/a> or early childhood infection. She didn\u2019t let her impairment get in the way of stardom, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work in \u201cChildren of a Lesser God\u201d in 1986. She has been nominated 14 times and is the spokesperson for the nation\u2019s leading provider of TV closed-captioning services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Halle Berry.<\/strong> She has played superheroes (Catwoman, Storm in \u201cThe X-Men\u201d), Bond girls and live-action cartoon characters (Miss Stone in \u201cThe Flintstones\u201d), but Halle Berry\u2019s best-known role may be for her portrayal of a grieving mother in \u201cMonster\u2019s Ball,\u201d for which she won an Oscar in 2002. Berry lost 80 percent of the hearing in her right ear after a former boyfriend struck her in the head, but she hasn\u2019t let that stop her from starring in a slew of popular films and earning widespread acclaim.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whoopi Goldberg.<\/strong> Whoopi Goldberg hasn\u2019t just hosted the Oscars, she has hoisted a golden statuette herself for her role in \u201cGhost,\u201d winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1991. She also happens to wear hearing aids after developing noise-induced hearing loss from \u201cyears and years of listening to music so loudly and so close to the eardrum.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Holly Hunter.<\/strong> Holly Hunter went deaf in her left ear after a childhood case of the mumps, but this didn\u2019t deter her from learning to play the piano \u2013 a skill she relied on to convincingly play a mute woman living in the 1850s in \u201cThe Piano.\u201d Incidentally, that role netted her an Oscar for Best Actress in 1993. In all, Hunter has been nominated an impressive 91 times and has 44 wins \u2013 proof that a \u201cdisability\u201d doesn\u2019t have to be disabling!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert Redford.<\/strong> One of America\u2019s most acclaimed actors, Robert Redford suffered a 60 percent loss of hearing in his left ear following an untreated ear infection that developed during the filming of \u201cAll is Lost\u201d in 2013. Redford spent many hours submerged in water while portraying a sailor lost at sea for the role, which led to an ear infection and subsequent hearing loss.
