While loud noises are bothersome to many, people with misophonia experience especially strong emotional, psychological and behavioral responses. Wednesday, July 9, is World Misophonia Awareness Day. Organized by the nonprofit soQuiet, the goal is to increase support for people living with this condition.
People with misophonia experience overwhelming and involuntary reactions to everyday sounds and other sensory experiences. These triggers may result in feelings of anger, anxiety or disgust. While some people may only have one triggering sound, others have multiple.
In honor of World Misophonia Day, soQuiet encourages community members to:
- Educate: Share information about misophonia and the impact it can have on a person’s daily life.
- Emphasize: Help spread the word about misophonia and your experiences with it by sharing with your social circles and listen without judgement when people share their own experiences.
- Empower: Discuss research on misophonia and ways to counter misunderstandings related to it.
soQuiet’s mission is to offer advocacy, support and resources for people who experience misophonia so that they may lead productive and serene lives.
