The American Tinnitus Association reports that as many as 50 million Americans experience tinnitus, a condition marked by ringing, buzzing, hissing or whistling in the ears with no external sound source. Unfortunately, unless the underlying cause of the tinnitus can be identified and treated, there is no cure. However, a number of strategies are available to help manage it. In fact, one recent study found that yoga can help reduce tinnitus symptoms.
What did the study on tinnitus and yoga find?
A recent study in Poland examined how 12 weeks of yoga affected 25 patients with chronic tinnitus. Ten of these patients underwent MRI scanning before and after training, and all patients were assessed using the Tinnitus Functional Index.
At the end of the study, the areas of most benefit for participants were control over tinnitus, sleep and quality of life. MRIs showed that connections of white matter in the motor cortex were also stronger.
“Yoga training has good potential to improve the daily functioning of patients with chronic tinnitus and can be considered a promising supporting method for tinnitus treatment,” the article, published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, reported.
About Practicing Yoga
Yoga originated in India around 6,000 BC. It has become common worldwide, with increasing popularity in the West due to its ability to help improve strength and flexibility and to promote relaxation.
Yoga enhances blood circulation throughout the body, as well as relaxes the muscles around the head and neck, which is likely how it helps reduce tinnitus. Below are eight asanas (yoga poses) that have been associated with improved tinnitus symptoms:
- Trikonasana (triangle pose)
- Padangusthasana (hand to big toe pose)
- Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog)
- Ustrasana (camel pose)
- Gomukhasana (cow face pose)
- Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
- Viparita Karani (legs up the wall)
- Matsyasana (fish pose)
Other Tinnitus Treatment Options
There are other options for treating tinnitus, and used in conjunction with regular yoga practice, you should experience less bothersome tinnitus. Alternative options include:
- White noise machines
- Tinnitus maskers
- Hearing aids
- Tinnitus retraining therapy
- Earwax removal
- Meditation
